981…Waiting in anticipation – Running Report page 16

I’m driving it still so should be fine, I think its the exhaust in some way, PSE flaps seemed noisier (when they actuate) recently so maybe one is part stuck or a gasket is going?!

There is no real loss of power that I can notice and oil etc seems fine too…

Could be a baffle come loose in exhaust maybe? That would give you a little flat 4 warble

I love the way the big car somehow looks like the toy! 😀

It would be a good picture to play with – put a border around the actual car to make it look like an advertising hoarding, then a small Stuart next to the toy car to give that more of an impression of being the real one.

TBH its a cracking idea but I only got in at 10 pm, not long eaten my tea…dont have the energy…plus the car is a bit tight to the edges of the photo…I’ll park the idea and maybe come back to it… 🙂

Stuart21UK – Posted May 16, 2017

but as an update to the thread and the PSE problems I had…the car went into OPC Silverstone on Thursday, I worked there all day whilst they pulled off these

and replaced them with 2 new shiny versions

They called me today to check that I was happy…I said ‘Hell Yeah’ adding ‘on leaving through Towcester the PSE bounced off the buildings going through the town, its different not just in the way its fixed, but even with PSE switched off the exhaust rasps on acceleration like it never did in the previous 30000 miles. With PSE switched on it notches up a level further!’

Seriously it was like driving the car away from the dealership for the first time again… 🙂

I asked her what the cost of the job was as it had been covered under warranty (that cost about £1650 in Sep 2016 for a further 2 years) she said it hadn’t been fully totted up yet but in the region of £2000!

Driving again tonight from cold with PSE ‘off’ it rasps a tad like it never did before…:bana:

I seriously wonder if one of the flaps is stuck open or more likely they have updated the exhaust since 2013…

Good result Stuart, I took out the extended warranty in April “just in case” and your experience shows its worth. No idea if the exhaust have been updated since 2013, MY 2014 2.7 with PSE is loud enough for me. Give Silverstone a shout, they can tell you.

Menoporsche – Posted May 17, 2017

Did they identify what was wrong with the exhaust? Nice if you could find out, to warn others here.

Playing with the photo would be fun, but will only work well up to a point – it will look like your car is parked on one of several concrete slabs separated by low hedges 🙂

The flappy bit stopped working I think and caused maybe some back pressure (I think that’s what he said) it (flaps operating into open position) certainly became louder when operating the PSE switch…

Stuart21UK – Posted August 25, 2017

So it is MOT and major service time (4 yrs ownership coming up and 37000 miles), plus a brake fluid change and apparently a change of spark plugs too….

This is what the local OPC had quoted over the phone:

Major Service (which isn’t all that from what I can gauge) £630 inc vat

Brake Fluid £95 inc vat

MOT £60 inc vat

Spark Plugs £277.98 which they have reduced to £260 on asking

Total £1065

Then I have the extras quoted by follow up email too:

Add. Maintenance Every – 4 Years Replace Tyre Sealant 1 £65.22
9A701261902 COMPRESSED AIR

Add. Maintenance Every – 80K Miles / 4 Years Check Air Bag, Trans./Engine Mounts Check And Front Susp. Mounts 1 £60.90

001 NO PARTS REQUIRED

Add. Maintenance – Drive Belt Check 040K Miles / 4 Years Drive Belt Check – (Inc.Rear Wall Flap Remove And Reinstall) 1 £52.20

001 NO PARTS REQUIRED

Plus I asked whether they would check the drain holes…she emailed me later to say they would do so FOC but if they needed cleaning then they would charge another £87 inc vat!

Does anyone else think that checking drain holes would be part of a standard service?!

Plus if I look at the pdf on Porsche here…

http://files1.porsche.com/filestore/download/uk/none/porscheservice-servicepricing-boxster-cayman-981/default/1ec99d38-c8df-11e5-8bd4-0019999cd470/Boxster-Cayman-(Type-981).pdf

separate link in case the above fails to work in future…

981 Service menu pdf

then it seems to indicate:

‘that a Major includes checking of the Polyrib belt’ – I assume this is the drive belt they want to charge me £52.20 extra for? Can anyone advise me if this is correct?

also ‘Inspection of: vehicle underside and engine compartment, coolant hoses, coolant (level and antifreeze check), radiator, air intake, brake system, brake hoses and lines, drive shafts, tyres, locks and latches, electrical equipment, horn, windscreen wiper washing system, power steering and fluid level check and lighting system (including headlights and indicators). Check condition, and adjust if required: fuel system, parking brake, clutch, steering gear, tie rod ends, axle joints, running gear, exhaust system, suspension, seat belts, throttle actuation and Polyrib belt’ – surely this is the same as Check Air Bag, Trans./Engine Mounts Check And Front Susp. Mounts – again they want to charge me an extra £60.90?! Can anyone advise me if this is correct?

I had budgeted around £800 for bits, expecting them to throw up extras like brake pads/discs etc but so far we are up to £1223 (and that’s if they dont do the drain holes or find that the brakes need doing all round)

Advise and guidance would most gratefully be received form the forum please

Jason986S – Posted August 25, 2017

I would certainly ask the question and maybe email them your findings above, either they’ll realise an error in their pricing and they’ll look stupid. Or something has changed and you will have “misunderstood” what you receive in certain packages. Sounds like £60.90 and £52.20 extras are inclusive of the major service anyway!

Leonard – Posted August 25, 2017

I can’t remember who it was but someone posted something similar in the 981 section of the forum. Got the belt checked for free at least if i remember rightly.

Leonard – Posted August 25, 2017

It is a 1000 pound service though the 4 year one..

That’s about right from when my 4 year service was due, bolton did the 2 minor checks Free tho, and a ten percent Porsche club discount.

Personally i I would get the brakes done first at an Indy, Porsche will be about 1600 – 2000 for all round and since the disks rust a lot I imagine these will need doing at your mileage. It will be less than a grand at an Indy using OEM parts.

Stuart21UK – Posted September 9, 2017

So as an update to the above, I got the Major Service done at RPM Technik (a local Porsche Specialist)- in total they did the following

Major which includes the items on the Minor below

Fixed Price Servicing for Porsche Boxster 3.4 S
Plug in and read out fault memory
Replace oil and filter
Replace pollen filter
Inspection of: vehicle underside for fluid leaks and rubbing and engine compartment, coolant hoses, coolant (level and antifreeze
check), radiator vents for debris, air intake, brake system, brake hoses and lines (Tectly all metal ones), drive shafts and CV boots, all
suspension and steering joints, tyre condition and pressures, lubricate locks and hinges, electrical equipment, horn, windscreen wiper
washing system, power steering and fluid level check and lighting system (including headlights and indicators)
Complimentary one litre Mobil 1 top-up
Test drive
Wash and vacuum

Additional aspects of the Major

As 20k service with addition of:
Check drive belt
Remove wheels clean up and lube hubs
Check and adjust handbrake
Check exhaust system for leaks and damage and check engine mountings

PLUS

I got the Spark Plugs replaced

Brake Fluid Changed

Drain Holes checked

Air Filter replaced (normally done at 60k or 6 years, I am at 34k and 4 years)

MOT done

Total price inc vat and all sundries – £824.68

Advisories are that front pads are close to sensors and the rear brake pads are 80% worn, will require pad and disc replacement at cost of £989.25 inc vat

TBH the car has done 34k on the original pads and discs which is much better than the 987 (IIRC I was replacing front pads every 12-15000 miles)

Stuart, if I recall correctly you took out the OPC extended warranty. If so how does the Indie service impact the warranty?

None as long as it is service to Porsche standards/timings and with Porsche parts (although they could of course argue the ‘standards’ bit I guess, but if they did I’d be back to the Indie that did it)

RPM said that Porsche will insist on doing their own ‘major’ service (even though the indie will have done it 12 mths earlier) before allowing me to extend the warranty again (plus I expect another 111 point check)….but I currently have no plans ot extend the warranty again come Sep 2018…

Got an invite to the Panamera launch so haven’t been blacklisted yet 😉

Stuart21UK – Posted September 12, 2017

Well the next saga with Silverstone OPC…I have no qualms in naming and shaming when the hit rate with them is so poor…

The quote from RPM is to do the front discs/pads/sensors on the 981 at £720 and an additional £270 to do the rear pads/sensor (no discs needed)…

I thought I’ll call the OPC to see what price they would charge….

A phone call to them and I’m told £675 for the front pads/discs/sensors etc and £270 for the rears pads/sensors…I ask the girl to confirm by email…she does firstly by screen dumping their internal booking system into a word document (totally unprofessional looking) and adds some reference to labour rates and reduction of 10-12% of cost in the body of the email…

I reply asking for a proper estimate and the one I get the following day covers all the detail and its £1240!

Now its a good job I work in the financial world as I was fully able to add up £675 and £279 and could see that it didnt add up to £1240!

Turns out (after several emails back and forth) that ‘there was some miscommunication between us’…too right there feking was…I asked you for a fully inclusive quote for my brakes to be done and you forget ot add in the labour cost!

So its now booked in with RPM to do the fronts and I’ll wait for the rear sensors to come on before taking it back to do them…(they reckon they are 80% worn so I could get another 4-5000 miles out of them on that basis!) – anticipated cost £720 for the fronts for the time being… 🙂

I honestly dont know why I keep trying to give the OPC business…
