981…Waiting in anticipation – Running Report page 12

Well DJMC, all I can say is that with that kind of mpg there is only one thing for it……

……you need to take yourself outside and have a word with yourself! 😀

Credit to Porsche on its mpg accuracy though, I’m hitting the ‘urban’ figures in a PDK S, coming up similar to Stuarts.

Should we be quoting fastest mph instead?

Everyone will say “70” 😀

I think the plan would be to boast your highest speed overall, in the same way as highest mpg.

I must try to get my mpg down, as you say. Out today, and the roads are (briefly) dry so I’ll give it a go!

Forget it. R1flyguy always wins with his works vehicle. 🙂

Same goes for the number of wheels on your mota too. 🙂

more of a diary note to myself:

I had the same a week or so ago and it seems ok now TBH….also today (27/1/2016) I had an inactive fan so the slight fogging on the inside of the car would not clear at all….pressing the ‘windscreen’ button and all manner of messing with temperature and/or fan speed and the blasted fan would not spin…then all of a sudden a couple of miles later it started!

Stuart21UK – Posted February 8, 2016

personal note re the above

Having been to the 718 launch at OPC Silverstone I spec’d the 718 Boxster s to the same as my 981S and it comes out at £60289

Whereas the 718 Cayman S comes out at £58084 with the same spec

Mine FWIW was £59299 in Sep 2013

I see no reason to change, mine is a keeper 🙂

I’m with you Stuart. Your car looks fantastic and totally up to date. You would probably have to spend 20K just to get the very latest model with fewer cylinders.

Its a no-brainer :thumbsup_anim:

+ 1 more!

a repost but I came across this clip I took of my youngest from about two and a half years ago…Steve (Ringer250) mentioned it at the 718 launch…brings a smile to my face everytime I watch it…

Great video for the family archive!

The interior on your car is just excellent Stuart

🙂

You should try and do a shot-for-shot remake every couple of years to see three of you growing up.

Such a good idea!

His daughter would grow up.

Stuart, however, would continue to be like a little kid with a new toy 😀

Are you trying to imply that Stuart’s got a baby face?

Stuart21UK – Posted May 6, 2016

at one point above Gutley mentioned the ‘three of us’…

I figured he was talking Lucy, me and my double chin!

Good idea though, will have to do another one, maybe remember to wire up a mic this time to get PSE

Stuart21UK – Posted May 8, 2016

Last weekend I cleaned the stored Carrera S summer wheels, today I Gtechniq C5 Wheel Armour coated them and swapped them with the winter set. I used the new Lidl impact wrench which made very short work of removing and replacing bolts! Best £30 I’ve spent for a while…

I gave the brake calipers a wipe over with a wet rag too….notice the nuts/bolts are coloured on the S (another member is having issues with these on his corroding, I assume they are not painted on the 2.7 Boxster/Cayman).

My eldest helped and posed afterwards…

Damage
Like a pillock I didn’t use an extender bar for the torque wrench and managed to scrape the facing edge of one of the spoke 🙁

Misc pics

🙂

REPEATED from the 718 thread as it gives a comparable view to my 981S and therefore add’s to the history of my current vehicle.

Ok so I took a 718 S with PDK out for an hour today..please excuse the poor quality iPhone pics (made worse by the cr*p weather)

mpg achieved

reckon I could have got the same out my 981 S driving in a similar manner (so that blows fuel efficiency out of the water slightly)

Conclusion? Which to take home…my 981S 6MT or the 718S PDK…

TBH that was easy…mine has manual transmission and whilst I think PDK is an accomplished system, it still doesn’t do it for me…I’d rather have full control (lets not start a PDK debate again though).

Aside from that, even if I had borrowed a manual I would not want to swap the 981 for the 718…comments above mention it is fast..in the driving I did today (admittedly in the wet) it wasn’t noticeable. I am sure in a straight line it would be a bit (0.6 seconds to 60 I think?) but real world I didn’t notice any difference and assume that those who have commented above were comparing a 986/987 in non-S guise to an S (and older cars were slower anyway…my 2.7 987 (comparable to older S’s) was 6.1 secs to 60 whereas the new 718 base is is 5.1 and S is 4.6 in 6MT form).

In summary my 981 S at 5.1 secs compared to a new PDK 718S at 4.6 ish just wasn’t that noticeable in normal driving.

The torque seemed comparable too (I’m sure the specs would show the 718 IS more torquey but in the real world I didn’t notice it, or at least I dont need it..ffs the manual 981S will do anything from 20 to 115mph ‘ish in 3rd gear!)

As far as comfort and equipment it is a familiar place to be if you own a 981, some subtle changes to air vents, steering wheel, the Sport Plus/sport/boost button on the wheel too (apparently you only get it if you spec Sport Chrono, otherwise you just get a Sport button on the central tunnel like the 981).

The PCM system is newer and much more sensitive to an approaching hand, more standard spec is included too…it now has the option of Airplay and online stuff too, but then the price is marginally more so you are not getting anything ‘free’. My car cost £56299 after discounts and incentives and a comparable 718 S 6MT would be around £62k before any discount you may be able to achieve (two and a half years later).

I dont think the 718 offers much more for the money compared to the 981 and certainly not for me to pay close to £30k to change ‘up’ (and I wouldn’t see it as a change up TBH, its not better it’s just different)

Lastly the engine has to be mentioned….I got the wife to try to video it, unfortunately it didn’t quite capture the sound true to life (and I can’t post some of the clips for self incrimination reasons). One is below…

The engine note is not terrible (actually saying that it reminded me of the way a Diesel engine sounds, i.e. a bit clattery) but does not sound as good as a flat 6, it sounds like a cheap motor has been put into a premium car..(sorry to prospective 718 buyers) I mean it actually sounds like a cheap engine…it lacks that performance sound, that feeling of quality engineering that the flat 6 gives you. The car I borrowed didn’t have PSE as I think they have only just made it available and the demos have it missing, maybe that will make it better…the car as standard did ‘pop and spit’ a little bit once warm.

Anyway after getting a px value of £32500 from them on mine, (so the car has cost me about £30000 in deprecation, deposit, pcp payments (since paid off) over the last 30 months then !..and that’s not including one minor service, tyres, insurance etc) I declined the offer of a 718 order slot.

I am completely happy, irrespective of the financial aspects, to keep my car for the foreseeable and can be completely honest when I say the 981S does everything i need it too, there is nothing in the current product range I can see myself trading it in against..the only possible future being a 911 (to scratch that itch) but at a £50000+ cost to change I can’t, and wouldn’t want to afford that ether…the 981 is simply far to good.

Not getting a sale on a 718 they then tried to persuade us into a newer Cayenne instead…you have to love ’em :)

Good informative and objective piece.

C’mon they have got to be the grandkids!

Cheers

Good unbiased write up Stuart on the 718.

IMHO you’ve have made a wise choice to keep the 981 (esp in the colour combo of yours)
Cheers

So my heater/air con shows as working but there is absolutely no air flow, whether I push for extreme heat or cold..the fan shows as increasing in speed on the digital display but there is nothing at all coming out of the (open) vents

Absolute nightmare the drive home from Beaulieu in the traffic, roof down I bake and roof up a baked with no air con!

I spoke to OPC Silverstone yesterday and its booked in for a 3 hour diagnosis on a ‘while I wait’ basis on Thursday. In essence my only option as the earliest I could leave the car and have a courtesy car was the 29th June!

topradio – Posted June 8, 2016

Stuart, isn’t this the common problem with the fan? Customers, particularly of early cars, have reported that the fan intermittently stops working. When I first heard about the problem it sounded like a software bug but I have read that you can reach through the intake from the frunk and spin the fan manually kicking it back into life.

Edit – if the car is no longer under warranty you may have a case to argue that as its a common known fault it should be repaired at Porsche’s expense.

Mine hasn’t suffered from this or the other fault with the brake pedal pivot binding – fingers crossed!
