981…Waiting in anticipation – Running Report page 13

Stuart, isn’t this the common problem with the fan? Customers, particularly of early cars, have reported that the fan intermittently stops working. When I first heard about the problem it sounded like a software bug but I have read that you can reach through the intake from the frunk and spin the fan manually kicking it back into life.

Edit – if the car is no longer under warranty you may have a case to argue that as its a common known fault it should be repaired at Porsche’s expense.

Mine hasn’t suffered from this or the other fault with the brake pedal pivot binding – fingers crossed!

Yes I think it is a common’ish fault…I mentioned to the service bloke about ‘spinning’ the fan to free it up and he said he had heard of people losing the end of their fingers so would advise against it…

In any case it is still within warranty so a 3 hour wait in the OPC and the pre-ordered fan was fitted to replaced the non-working unit at no cost, plus the car got a wash too 🙂

Lovely to have cold air again, especially in this fine weather we are having at present 😀

I’ve had both the ‘brake pedal’ thing and the ‘fan thing’ so here’s hoping that you dont get either after your warranty has ceased (unless it has already)…I will certainly be considering extending the warranty when it comes up in the next 3 months (weird as I never did on the 987 and probably won’t on the Cayenne either)

Glad it is sorted, especially after your warm trip home last Sunday! 🙂

Stuart21UK – Posted June 10, 2016

..yeah talk about hot…hot roof down and stationary and hot roof up but shielded from the direct sun…and my body doesn’t regulate itself with heat like it should either as you saw Sunday

So today I had a courtesy call from OPC Silverstone to check I was happy with the work done last week…amazing how well that works as I called back to book in for an MOT and warranty extension for early Septemeber (thought I’d better get it booked to secure a loan car as they were booked up around 3-4 weeks ahead of time when I called about the fan issue).

So costs quoted at:

£54.85 for MOT plus

£260 for 111 point check to assess for warranty extension, I negotiated this down from £260, to £30 off, to a final £96 inc vat plus

£169 for a single year Porsche Assistance and £275 for two plus

£660 for a single year warranty and £1190 for two

So total cost for all and 2 year warranty/PA/111 check = £1561 or for 1 year of each £925 (both plus MOT)

I never extended the standard ‘used’ warranty on the 987, I’m more minded to do so on the 981. It’s odd I feel different about it, maybe it’s because the car is worth more than the 987 was at the point its initial 2 years expired (and it was a little bit older too).

It’s booked in, I have 10 weeks to reflect and cancel if I change my mind…

Stuart, while stuff can go wrong with a 981, I would consider myself unlucky if I needed the best part of 2 grand of unexpected work doing in the next two years on a 3 year old car that has been properly serviced and maintained as your car has.

Why not stuff the money away and if something expensive does fail then you can pay for it and if not you can go on an extra holiday in two years time?

RCS – Posted June 13, 2016

Having had a 4 year old full OPC serviced low mile (18k) 997.2 which needed a new PDK, (and then lost drive again, no tangible reason provided), 2 x PCM’s, and a high pressure fuel pump, everything failing at 10 week intervals. Appreciate you’re manual not pdk, but I’d stick with the Porsche warranty, and certainly must if you have a pdk.

Oh, and I forgot the water expansion tank cap needed replacing – what is it with Porsche’s wanting these caps replacing, never had it with other makes

Perhaps it’s because I have had both my cars from new and know where they have ‘been’ that I am prepared to take the risk. When I see how the cars at Silverstone are treated I really wouldn’t want one of those & they will be polished up, fitted with new tyres and sold as Porsche approved. And what do you think happens to the press cars that have been Clarksoned? they end up being sold as Porsche owned cars (as if that makes them a better car)

There is a video on the net where a guy does 50 full-on launch control starts one after another in his 911 just to prove how reliable they are. Now, while the car did it without a fuss, it has to take some life out of the motor.

We have recently been looking at the new Mini Clubman and as part of the research test drove a ‘demonstrator’ that had about 1K on the clock. Just out of interest I took a look under the car and it looked like it had been entered into rally stage – I am convinced that, as the Clubman is a new model, this could have been a car that had been given to the press to use and abuse for evaluation.

sooo…next issue to sort with Porsche is my driver’s side seat belt…

this is the passenger side (it should be noted that none are quite as dirty as the pictures make them look!)

I would expect the driver’s side ot be a bit dirtier given it is used far more (passenger less than 5% of the time) but at around 27000 miles I wouldn’t expect it to be ‘bobbly’ and the edge starting to go..

Going to make a call and send some pics I think…I am sure they will say wear and tear but I have never had this on a car before…the 987 was fine after 65000 miles…

Jason986S – Posted July 7, 2016

As a safety concern, I’d like to think they take a bit more responsibility. That kind of wear after your low mileage is madness. I’ve seen cars with hundreds of thousands of miles with less wear.

Southy – Posted July 7, 2016

that does seem a bit odd, took my belts off for the webbing change two weeks about the cars done 65k miles but is 15 years old and it had none of that wort of wear or damage to the old black webbing.

Stuart21UK – Posted July 7, 2016

I have phone Silverstone OPC and emailed over pictures for them to refer to warranty person…will wait and see what the result is.

Stuart21UK – Posted July 8, 2016

A new attachment to my 981 that I didn’t want this afternoon….a towbar….with attached Freelander…

The guy that reversed into me (in stationary traffic) to let out someone from a side road was thoroughly apologetic and said it was his fault…(I have dash cam footage to prove it anyway 😉 )

A friendly passer by got out his adjustable spanners and removed the tow bar to release me…

Now I have an insurance claim pending

Ringer250 – Posted July 8, 2016

Sorry to see that Stuart, hopefully not too much damage.

Jason986S – Posted July 8, 2016

Wow, that’s super unfortunate. Hopefully insurance is kind to you!

mike597 – Posted July 9, 2016

Ouch, top work from the friendly passer by though, bet the freelander driver thought ‘it had to be a fecking porsche’

EXY – Posted July 9, 2016

Maybe you should have said nothing and saved on some fuel bills, well, your luck has to change so he would probably have been going in the same direction 🙂

Looking forward to the DC footage COMPLETE with sound 😉

Stuart21UK – Posted July 9, 2016

Thought about posting it but thought better of it until the matter is resolved…also the reason only my reg is obvious and you can’t identify the other party… 😉

…oh and I may have to bleep the sound…

CliveH – Posted July 11, 2016

wow! I just read your entire thread @boxsternoob56!!

Very interesting read about your pleasures and some of the trials of Boxster ownership.

You’re of course not such a noob anymore and even your 981 is now nearly 3 years old.

There’s so much I could comment on in this thread but I would be here for the rest of the day!

So I will limit my thoughts to just two points:

1. what a beautiful motor!
2. I wouldn’t swap it for a 718S either 🙂

seat belt

so the next exciting episode in my Porsche warranty claim for the seatbelt above…

the response so far received states:

Apologies for the delay in getting back to you. We have spoken with Porsche GB warranty team and they have confirmed that the seatbelt would not be covered under the warranty as it looks like it has been catching/rubbing on something.

Would you like me to supply a quote to replace it?

to say I was shocked was an understatement…my response to them maybe be added to this post later (I have threatened publication if they dont sort it out so am not sure if it is wise to post it at this point in time)…

I cannot believe that they would not replace the belt…what do they think I have done to it!? Damaged it on purpose?

I should also add that it was only when I chased non-reply form my original email for the 7th July did I get this response back…who knows if I would have heard at all otherwise.

Mad from LU7!
