981…Waiting in anticipation – Running Report page 1

This is my running report for my Porsche Boxster 981s from order to present day

NB for background this was originally posted on Boxa.net. Any reference to Boxsternoob56 or Stuart21UK is me on that forum. You will see my posts and updates but also all the other members’ dialogue within the thread too.

The anticipation is killing me……

I ordered a new GT SIlver Boxster S on the 12th June 2013.

I was given a build date of the 26th August and yesterday the OPC confirmed that it was showing as ‘build finalised’ on the system and still in factory.

I never got to hear the spec cut off date so it’s a good job I didn’t buckle on my choice of colour or spec in the end (Guards Red with Black Interior was original choice becoming 2nd choice in the end). I just hope on arrival it will be everything I want it to be.

Today he confirmed that the car is sat waiting at Emden Port waiting its own private barge (I have visions of the barge the Queen had for the Jubilee celebrations but I’m sure that’s not the case) and despite an hour of looking online I can’t figure which boat it will catch (or when it will arrive at Sheerness).

Anyway the spec, for this interested, is as follows –

Boxster S

Option Individualisation

Code

Exterior Colour

8V Red convertible top

U2 GT Silver Metallic

Interior Colour

NG Carrera Red natural leather interior

546 Roll-over bar with exterior colour paint finish

583 Smoking package

630 Light design package

810 Floor mats

(poorly) Photoshopped pictures to show wheel choice (proper ones to follow on arrival) –

To say I can’t wait is truly understating how I feel!

this is the colour combination of the 2008 RS60 Spyder 🙂

Stuart21UK – Posted August 30, 2013
indeed…and cost £2700 more than the Red/Black I originally spec’d… :whistle1:

SFO – Posted August 30, 2013
money well spent !!!
very expensive if you want to change colour later 🙂

Stuart21UK – Posted August 30, 2013
Well that’s why I was a little anxious (more than normal) as if it isn’t something I can live with then its a £10 to £15k cost to change!

The Guards Red in photos comes out much more vibrant, as does the Carrera Red interior, in photos online than it actually is in real life…I saw a GT/Red combo in Silverstone’s used section a few weeks ago and it was almost like the Red interior had mellowed a bit. Didn’t look as much in yer face as pictures on the net make it appear.

SFO – Posted August 30, 2013
I have had carrera red interior twice and would have it again 🙂

Stuart21UK – Posted August 30, 2013
and you had manual too I think?…which is in the minority nowadays

temporarychicken – Posted August 30, 2013
Welcome to the world of 981, you wont be disappointed! It is the best car in the world after all :bonjeur:

Sliver exterior plus red interior and red roof? The boxster prototype was this colour.

I am a total sliver hater, but I must admit that silver+red+red does look really lovely.

Your photoshopped renders (excellent by the way) show the sports-design steering wheel, but I notice you didn’t go for this in your options. However, the sports-design steering wheel is not really necessary in a manual transmission car.

It will be sweet.

Delbox – Posted August 30, 2013
Another manual! Excellent! Somebody else who is willing to make his own choice rather than follow the PDK default.

temporarychicken – Posted August 30, 2013
Baah you guys with your manuals. I bet you wish Porsche still made ignition advance/retard levers and starting handles in the boot :whistle1:

Maybe you are worried if you get automatics (PDK) your wives will try and drive the cars..!

SFO – Posted August 30, 2013

RS60 – GT Silver, red roof, carrera red interior .. Manual
981S – carrara white, red roof, carrera red interior .. Manual
997 GT3 – carrara white, white roof, black interior .. Manual

Delbox – Posted August 30, 2013 (edited)
temporarychicken, quite the opposite! Because my 981 Boxster S will be a manual, I’ll be pleased that my wife will drive it – like she did all my previous 6 manual Porsche cars, including the 996 Turbo and 997 Carrera 4S.

Perhaps PDK is chosen by …… No Del, don’t go there!!

boxsternoob56, 666 is an interesting choice.

I’m sure you’re aware that it requires you to insert a SIM card into the PCM to make it work – and only supports the pairing of mobile phones with SAP. Option 619 (mobile phone preparation) offers full Bluetooth capability for smart mobiles that use HFP. I’ve read much discussion across a variety of forums about the selection of phone options – because, like for many other options, the information provided is confusing, misleading and incoherent. So, please ensure that you are making a properly informed choice so that you’re not disappointed when your car arrives.

Sorry if you’ve made your appropriate choice already, just offering a word of caution if not.

Car looks stunning, excellent choice of colours. Nice spec too!

Decision made and car at Emden awaiting transport so it’s too late if I took the wrong choice,,,,from the configurator:

666 Telephone module for PCM £526
Internal quadband GSM telephone module with Bluetooth interface for good manageability and optimises talk quality. Enables telephone calls to be made in following modes: With inserted SIM card, the link will be established by the external GSM antenna. Via the Bluetooth link established between your mobile phone and the telephone module by the SIM Access Profile (SAP). Once automatic pairing of the devices is complete, the mobile phones GSM antenna is switched off to conserve battery charge, the link will be established by the external GSM antenna (available only for mobile phones with SIM Access Profile). Via the Bluetooth link established between your mobile phone and the telephone module by the Handsfree Profile (HFP). In this case, the GSM connection will always be made via the mobile phones antenna. Includes microphone, hands-free and mute functionality and control via the PCM, multifunction steering wheel or voice control (scope of possible control functions depends om mode of operation)

619 Preparation for mobile phone £445
Bluetooth interface for the connection to a mobile phone with the handsfree profile (HFP). Contains the handsfree function and mute function with possibility to operate the basic functions on the base of the CDR, the PCM or multifunction steering wheel. Including a microphone, cabling and GSM antenna

that implies to me that the option I took gives everything that 619 does AND ability to put a SIM in too…God I hope that’s right….you’re definitely correct in saying the configurator can leave you a little confused though..

Delbox – Posted August 31, 2013
The main difference, from a Bluetooth perspective, is that 666 only functions with mobiles that use SAP – whereas 619 uses the HFP employed by most smart phones. But, as you say, it’s too late now to worry about it – and I envy you because your car is so close to delivery while mine won’t be built until 20 Sep. Nice specification by the way!

Are you sure? The description above for 666 says it does SAP and HFP. When I had an Audi A6 I remember there was a basic bluetooth module that did HFP then a better one that did SAP too. SAP generally gives a more stable signal as it uses the antenna built into the car rather than the one on the phone.

agree

Delbox – Posted August 31, 2013
Stuart21UK on re-reading 666, I’m sure that you’re right – and I apologise if my well-intentioned comments were misleading. Sorry!

Stuart21UK- Posted August 31, 2013
No problem mate, you had me a little worried but I think 666 gives all options 🙂
The PSE Is my most anticipated option anyhow, if that’s good I won’t be taking any calls whilst driving anyhow 😉

E4BRT – Posted August 31, 2013
Wow. Car looks gorgeous.

neil.c – Posted August 31, 2013
Well we will find out when the car turns up, 666 looks to do as 619 plus more, as it costs more plus it appears to have a built in GSM antenna for better in car reception and phone battery life, which is good as Bluetooth will sap the power.
